For Children and Pets Endangered by Salt-based Melters this Winter, Consider a Non-Hazardous Alternative for Melting Snow & Ice

NEW YORK, NY, December 6, 2004 — People living in cold-weather states routinely use rock salt and salt-based products to melt snow and ice are often unaware they pose a health danger to children and pets who come in contact with them, a survey shows. They need to know there is a melter that is safe for both.

Nearly two-thirds of respondents were unaware of the danger, according to an Opinion Research Corporation national survey of 500 adults for GAIA Enterprises, makers of Safe Paw, the only non-hazardous melter available that contains no salt and is safe for pets, children, surfaces, and the environment.

Safe Paw is a patented dual-effect compound, made up of crystalline amide core infused with special glycols and works just as good or better than salts or salt-based ice melt products. This non-corrosive composition gives Safe Paw a two-way timed-release action. The liquid component starts melting ice instantly while breaking its surface tension, which speeds up the melting process.

Salts can burn and irritate children's eyes and skin and cause internal problems if swallowed according to pediatrician groups.

Leading veterinarian groups such as the American Veterinary Medical Association and the American Animal Hospital Association caution that exposure to salts and salt-based ice melting products, a common occurrence, can cause dogs severe dermatitis, inflammation of the paws and serious gastrointestinal problems including vomiting and internal burns of the mouth and digestive tract.

The survey revealed 60% of households use rock salt or salt-based products; 30% don't use anything, 9% use other products and 1% didn't know if the ice melt product contained salts. The respondents (62% total; 66% of men) were not aware that salt and salt-based ice melting products pose a health danger to pets and children.

Safe Paw retails for $12.95 - $14.95 for an 8 lb 3 oz jug and also comes in a 5 gal pail. Safe Paw is available at Stop & Shop, Giant Food, CVS, Shaw's, Big Y, Acme, Kroger, PetSmart and independent pet stores, veterinarian offices and via catalogs and web sites.
